Formal
Hairstyles
Whether you
are preparing for a prom, a wedding or another special occasion,
there are many formal hairstyles to choose from that fit all hair
lengths and types. Try a classy bob, if you have short hair, or
if your hair is medium to long, an "updo" is always a
good bet.
Many people
have their formal hairstyles set by professionals, but if you are
willing to practice and want to work along with a friend, you can
create wonderful formal hairstyles at home. Just make sure that
you try the formal hairstyle you want at home instead of risking
a trial run on the big day.
Striking formal
hairstyles for short hair include sleek, straight dos. You can sport
a classic bob that is super-shiny and very close to the face by
using sprays and gels for maximum sheen. After a shampoo and conditioning
treatment, sculpt your bob with gel or mousse. Blow dry and straighten
with a flat iron. Finish by giving your style definition, setting
it and spraying it once again with a spray that holds well and gives
the hair a shiny look.
Updos quite
popular formal hairstyles, and if you have even a little hair to
spare, you can make a great formal updo. A chignon is a popular
type of updo, which is a neat, elegant hairstyle made famous by
Reese Witherspoon at the Oscars. To make your chignon:
- Shampoo and
condition hair-although you might want to shampoo your hair the
day before the event, since freshly washed pony tails can be a
challenge to work with
- Rinse out
the conditioner and follow with a cool rinse for shine
- Dry the hair
with a hairdryer and a paddle brush
- Once your
hair is dry, spray it, and make a ponytail at the nape of the
neck
- Fasten the
pony with elastic the same shade of your hair. Divide the pony
into three sections
- Curl each
section of the pony and pin the curl until it cools. Then remove
the pin.
- Gently brush
the curls and tuck the pony into the elastic band forming your
chignon.
- You might
want some tendrils to hang loose on the sides
Many people
love formal hairstyles that combine updos with curly looks. You
can create a nest of curls on your head by following these steps:
- Wash, condition
and dry hair
- Form a pony
tail in the center of your head.
- Divide your
ponytail into 5 sections
- Curl each
section with a curling iron and pin the curls
- Leave the
pins in the curls and spray with hairspray
- You may want
to add flowers, baby's breath or hair jewelry.
Another great
updo combines a French Twist and ringlets. This is a great style
for medium to long hair.
- Shampoo and
condition your hair.
- Roll sections
of your hair with sassy curlers and leave in for 30 minutes
- Once you
have taken out the curlers, separate the top section and pin it
up.
- Roll the
bottom section into a French twist. Secure it with bobby pins
- Comb out
the top sections and once the curls are arranged, pin them in
place.
- Complete
your look with flowers, and hair jewelry
- Spray to
keep the style
It is important
to remember the importance of using a good hairspray for formal
hairstyles. No one wants their bun to come unrolled at the prom
or curls to droop and fall. Since formal occasions, such as weddings
and proms, involve dancing, this is especially important to remember.
